Closing the Gaps: Gender and Race in Nonprofit Boardrooms
A joint project of The Nonprofit Center at La Salle University and the Women’s Nonprofit Leadership Initiative
In the fall of 2019 we produced the Philadelphia region’s first in-depth study and report on the composition of the boards of the 50 largest nonprofit educational (eds) and medical (meds) institutions in Greater Philadelphia, The Gender Gap in Nonprofit Boardrooms. The results showed a significant gender gap in the boardrooms, revealing that women of color are the most underrepresented group.
The 2022 report, Closing the Gaps: Gender and Race in Nonprofit Boardrooms expands on our 2019 report, and commends the institutions that have shown significant progress in the last three years. But it also points out the work required for many of these boards in order to reflect the diversity of their staffs, students, patients, and the communities they serve, and to give more women and people of color the opportunity to become board chairs.
